Alan McGuire, PhD

Core Investigator, VA HSR&D Center for Health Information and Communication
Research Scientist, ACT Center of Indiana, Department of Psychology, Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis

Dr. McGuire studies the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based psychosocial interventions for people with severe mental illness. In other words, he is interested in making sure that people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other mental illnesses get treatments that we know work. To this end, he studies ways to measure successful implementation, and ways to change organizational and programmatic factors that may lead to better implementation. In a recently concluded VA QUERI-funded study, Dr. McGuire examined the implementation of illness management and recovery (IMR) across VA, including a nation-wide survey and in-depth interviews with select stakeholders. In his current NIH-funded work, Dr. McGuire is studying the link between competence in IMR provision and consumer outcomes. He is also interested in how building treatment around a person’s goals may make services more effective and satisfying. Dr. McGuire is the recipient of a VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Career Development Award in which he is developing methods for assessing the goal setting process. Finally, Dr. McGuire has burgeoning collaborations with colleagues regarding the self-management of diverse chronic conditions such as traumatic brain injury and pain.
