Professor of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine
Research Scientist, Center for Health Services Research, Regenstrief Institute, Inc.

Matthew J. Bair, MD, MS is a core investigator of the CHIC. He is also a research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute, Inc., and Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. His primary research interests include: pain clinical trials; improving pain management in the primary care setting, and designing interventions that combine pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches for chronic pain. Dr. Bair is a former VA HSR&D Career Awardee and has received continuous Merit Review funding from HSR&D and RR&D since 2005. His involvement in numerous studies has resulted in more than 140 publications; many in respected and high-impact journals that have influenced clinical practice and policy (e.g. 2009-053 VHA Pain Management Directive). The funding of the SCEPTER Trial by the VA Cooperative Studies program has the potential to be a landmark study.  This large-scale, multi-site study will provide critical information to veterans, medical providers, administrators, and policy makers concerning the optimal management of chronic low back pain. He is on the Editorial Boards for Pain Medicine and the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
